How to get a website – Step by Step Guide

Obtain a domain name.

A domain name is the online version of registering your business.  You are registering your website name, so that it is unique to you and no-one else can use it.

When thinking of a domain name, it needs to be relevant to your business and is usually your business name. For example ours is www.mediamanage.co.uk.

Using google, search for “domain name registration” and click on a website where you can register your domain name. You will be guided through the process. Dependent on the availability (sometimes another company may have registered the name if it is common, so you may need to adapt it slightly) there is a charge for 1 or 2 years registration. Once registered, this means that another company cannot use your domain name as their website address for the duration of your registration. You can continually renew your registration on an annual or 2 yearly basis.

If you haven’t already got one, we can register a domain name for you.

Find a web host

A web host is a company who own lots of online land! They have lots of computers and servers all housing lots of websites and making sure they are all online. Imagine a web host as a landlord from whom you rent a home for your website.

If you haven’t already got a web host, we’d be happy to help.
